What Is Chiffon Fabric? Meaning, Properties & Uses

What is chiffon fabric?

Chiffon is a very light, sheer, plain-weave fabric with a soft, floaty fall and a faint rough feel from its twisted yarns. It layers well, takes colour and print beautifully, and is available in crinkled, foil-print and dyeable versions.

Chiffon fabric in Hindi

In Hindi, chiffon fabric is written as शिफॉन. In everyday Indian trade talk you will also hear it called "chiffon kapda" or "chiffon cloth".

What is chiffon fabric used for?

Common uses include dupattas, sarees, overlays, tops, scarves, gowns and bridal drapes. Dyeable (RFD) chiffon is also available if you want your own shades.

How to choose chiffon fabric

Chiffon frays easily and can be slippery to cut, so buy a little extra length. Choose a lining colour that suits the shade if you need opacity.

How to wash and care for chiffon fabric

Sheer fabrics are best hand-washed or machine-washed in a mesh bag on a gentle cycle, then dried flat. Press with a cool iron on the reverse, and use fine needles and a small stitch length when sewing.

How is chiffon different from organza?

Chiffon is soft and flowing, while organza is crisp and holds a shape. Chiffon is used for drapes and dupattas; organza for volume and structure.
