Shop fabrics Contact the teamNot sure how much fabric to buy? Pick the garment, your size and the width of the fabric, and this calculator gives an estimate in metres, including an allowance for wastage and print matching. There is also a curtain tab.
How the estimate works
The calculator starts from common tailoring figures for each garment at a standard 112 cm (44 inch) width. It then adjusts for the fabric width you enter, because a wider fabric needs less length. It adds a wastage allowance and extra for prints, checks and stripes that need matching, and rounds up to the nearest quarter of a metre.
Typical fabric needed at 112 cm width
| Garment | Approx. metres |

| Blouse | 1 |

| Long kurta / Anarkali | 4 |
| Salwar / palazzo | 2.25 |
| Dupatta | 2.25 to 2.5 |
| Knee-length dress | 2.5 to 2.75 |
| Gown (flared) | 4.5 to 5 |
| Lehenga skirt (flared) | 4 to 5 |

Tips to buy the right amount
- Buy all the fabric for one garment, or one production run, in a single order so the shade matches.
- For prints, checks and stripes, allow extra to match the pattern across seams.
- Pre-wash fabrics that may shrink, such as cotton and rayon, and allow for it.
- Fabrics here are mostly 150 cm wide. Check the width on each product page.
Frequently asked questions
How much fabric is needed for a kurti?
About 2.5 metres at 112 cm width, or around 1.9 to 2 metres at 150 cm, for a knee-length kurti in size M. Longer lengths, wider flare and full sleeves need more.
How much fabric is needed for a lehenga?
A flared lehenga skirt usually needs 4 to 5 metres at 112 cm, plus the blouse and dupatta. Heavily flared designs need more.
How much fabric do I need for curtains?
Multiply the window or rail width by the fullness you want (usually 2×), divide by the fabric width to get the number of widths, and multiply by the drop plus hem. The curtain tab does this for you.
Does fabric width matter?
Yes. Wider fabric needs less length for the same garment. Always enter the real width of the fabric you plan to buy.
