GSM stands for grams per square metre. It tells you how heavy a fabric is, and it is the number buyers use to compare fabrics. Use this calculator to work out the weight of a length of fabric, how many metres are in a kilo, or the GSM of a piece you have weighed.

How the GSM calculation works

  • Weight of fabric (g) = GSM × width in metres × length in metres
  • GSM = weight in grams ÷ (width in metres × length in metres)
  • Metres per kg = 1000 ÷ (GSM × width in metres)
  • Ounces per square yard = GSM × 0.0295

Example

A georgette of 120 GSM that is 150 cm wide weighs 120 × 1.5 = 180 g per running metre. So 1 kg of that fabric is about 5.6 metres.

Frequently asked questions

What does GSM mean in fabric?

GSM means grams per square metre. A higher GSM means a heavier, denser fabric.

Is higher GSM always better?

No. The right GSM depends on what you are making. Light fabrics suit scarves, dupattas and summer shirts, while heavier fabrics suit jackets, trousers and upholstery.

How do I find GSM at home?

Weigh a piece of known length and width on a kitchen scale, then use the "Find GSM from weight" tab. A bigger piece gives a more accurate result.

Does GSM change with width?

GSM does not change with width, but the weight per running metre does. A wider fabric of the same GSM weighs more per metre.
