What Is Satin Fabric? Meaning, Properties & Uses

What is satin fabric?

Satin is defined by its weave rather than its fibre: long yarns float over the surface, giving a smooth, glossy face and a duller back. It drapes fluidly and feels cool to the touch. Fabrics here include polyester, Korean, Habutai and cotton satins, plus stretch satins with lycra.

Satin fabric in Hindi

In Hindi, satin fabric is written as साटन. In everyday Indian trade talk you will also hear it called "satin kapda" or "satin cloth".

How to choose satin fabric

Decide between a high-sheen and a matte satin, and check whether you need stretch. Stretch satins suit fitted garments, while non-stretch types are better for gowns and linings.

How to wash and care for satin fabric

Most polyester-based fabrics wash well at low temperatures and dry quickly. Use a cool iron on the reverse and test a small swatch first, because finishes and prints vary between designs.

Is satin the same as silk?

No. Satin describes a type of weave and can be made from silk, polyester, viscose or cotton. Silk satin is a natural fibre, while polyester satin is more affordable and easier to care for.
