Understanding how fabrics capture and release fragrance helps designers, boutique owners, and customers control scent for comfort, preservation, and brand experience.

How fabrics capture fragrance — the science in short

Absorption vs adsorption

  • Absorption: scent molecules penetrate into the bulk of a fibre (common in porous natural fibres like cotton, linen, wool).
  • Adsorption: molecules cling to the surface (more common on synthetics where surface interactions dominate).

Fibre chemistry matters

  • Natural fibres (cotton, linen, silk, wool): porous, hygroscopic (they attract moisture), and generally retain smells longer. Wool has scales and lanolin that trap odours differently than cotton.
  • Synthetic fibres (polyester, nylon): hydrophobic — they may hold oily or volatile fragrance molecules tightly on the surface, often making smells harder to remove.
  • Blends combine behaviours and can be unpredictable.
